Earth art

Entrance by Andy Goldsworthy.  He is a is a British sculptor, photographer and environmentalist producing site-specific sculpture and land art situated in natural and urban settings.Andy Goldsworthy is the subject of a 2001 documentary feature film called Rivers and Tides, directed by Thomas Riedelsheimer. He has been quoted as saying, "I think it's incredibly brave to be working with flowers and leaves and petals. But I have to: I can't edit the materials I work with. My remit is to work with nature as a whole

Light Sculpture

Raethro by James Turrell. He is American artist primarily concerned with light and space.  Turrell is best known for his work in progress, Roden Crater. He acquired the crater in 1979. Located outside Flagstaff, Arizona, Turrell is turning this natural cinder volcanic crater into a massive naked-eye observatory, designed specifically for the viewing of celestial phenomena. His other works usually enclose the viewer in order to control their perception of light.
Quote
"I feel my work is made for one being, one individual. You could say that's me, but that's not really true. It's for an idealized viewer. Sometimes I'm kind of cranky coming to see something. I saw the Mona Lisa when it was in L.A., saw it for 13 seconds and had to move on. But, you know, there's this slow-food movement right now. Maybe we could also have a slow-art movement, and take an hour."

Casting

This sculpture is taken from the Exhibition: The Decade Show by Luis Jimenez. Jiménez was known for his large polychromed fiberglass sculptures.  He was killed in his studio on June 13, 2006 when a large section of Blue Mustang, intended for Denver International Airport, fell on him and severed an artery in his leg. The sculpture was based on the eight-foot-high sculpture Mesteño (Mustang), now on display at the University of Oklahoma.  This is tragic but at least he passed while doing something he loved.  His daughter was also a contestant on Season 4 of Project runway on Bravo.

Video

Technology by Nam June Paik.  Nan June Paik is considered to be the first video artist. He made his big debut at an exhibition known as Exposition of Music-Electronic Television, in which he scattered televisions everywhere and used magnets to alter or distort their images.  One of his notable quotes is "Skin has become inadequate in interfacing with reality. Technology has become the body's new membrane of existence."

Portrait Photography

Mike Cloud by Annie Liebowitz and Susan Sontag. I selected this image not only becasue it was the only one when you searched the artist in ARTsor but also becasue it is funny.  The portrait photography is creative in this piece.  The normal portrait is very still while the person poses for the picture.  Think of your holiday picture. This piece takes it to the next level by utilizing someone else face. Liebowitz is known for her highly publicized photos in Rolling Stones magazine from 1970 to 1983. In 1978 Liebowitz was the first female to photograph Joan Armatrading.  Liebowitz is also the last photographer to photograph Jon Lennon before his death.

Instant collage

Untitled by Walker Evans.  I selected this image due to the definition of instant collage.  This image captures a ear of everyday people. His principal subject was the vernacular—the indigenous expressions of a people found in roadside stands, cheap cafés , advertisements , simple bedrooms, and small-town main streets. In 1973, Evans began to work with the innovative Polaroid SX-70 camera and an unlimited supply of film from its manufacturer. The unique SX-70 prints are the artist's last photographs, the culmination of half a century of work in photography.

Mixed Media

Offering by Robert Rauschenberg.  Robert was painter and graphic artist whose early work anticipated the pop culture era. In 1993 he was awarded the National Medal of Arts. His was born by the name of Milton Ernest Rauschenberg. In 1966 he and Billy Kluver launched the Experiments in Arts and Technology.  Robert would pick up garbage becasue he "wanted something other than what I could make myself and I wanted to use the surprise and the collectiveness and the generosity of finding surprises. And if it wasn't a surprise at first, by the time I got through with it, it was.

Collage

The Fifth of Never of Old Near by Jess.  Jess created his own vocabulary for his work.  The collage above would be referenced as a paste-up.Jess was a radio-chemist by profession and dreamed of a nuclear holocaust that would destroy the world in 1975.  This collage has so many different images that I am not able to see an obvious trend. The one stand out image is the girl with the gun hat since there a different colorization.  Some of images give a sense of violence. I am making an assumption that the machines in the bottom half of the picture are portions of a nuclear factory.

Oil Paint

Circle by Jackson Pollock. The medium used for this paiting is oil paint.  The bright, vibrant colors are achieved becasue the artist used oil paint.  The artist was able to blend the bright colors with darker colors to create a continuous flow. Pollock was a major figure in the abstract expressionist movement.  He is known for his "drip" paintings.  Drip painting is where paint is poured or dripped on to the canvas to create an abstract image.During his lifetime, Pollock enjoyed considerable fame and notoriety. He was regarded as a mostly reclusive artist. He had a volatile personality, and struggled with alcoholism for most of his life. This addiction could potentially distort his image of reality and contribute to abstract art.  Pollock was also the subject of a movie that was nominated for and Academy Award in 2000.  As Pollock progressed as an artist he went away from naming his paintings to numbering them.  He changed to this concept to have people focus on the paiting itslef and not what is was as presented by the title.

fresco

Liberation of Peon by Diego Rivera.  This is one of eight "portable" fresco panels that Rivera made for his retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1931. Rivera based the panel on another of the same title that he painted in 1923 for the Ministry of Public Education building in Mexico City.During the revolution in Mexican society in the 1920s and 1930s, Diego Rivera was a leader among the core group of artists dedicated to creating a radical public art. Monumental murals for government buildings, designed for the public, were ideally suited to these artists' socialist commitment to presenting a visual "people's history" of Mexico. For his mural commissions, Rivera revived the Italian Renaissance fresco tradition of applying pigments ground in water to a moist lime plaster wall surface.

Etching

A View of Amsterdam from the North West by Rembrandt. The medium used was etching.  Before Rembrandt's 30th birthday his name was synonymous with artistic excellence.Rembrandt sold the plates he created in an auction to raise funds with the direction that the plates were not to be used for at least 100 years after his passing.  The European  family that purchased the plates adhered to the agreement.

Woodcut

Jestri by Emil Nolde.  The medium used was woodcut.  Thew woodcut print offers the artist a means of showing greater contrast with black and white.  The details of the persons face specially under the eye show an aging quality since they represent wrinkles.  Also the cheeks show depth by adding the black to show an impression. Emil Nolde is considered to be one of the first Expressionist.Hitler actually condemned all of Emil Nolde works since he deemed them to be degenerate art.  Degenerate art is defined as a term adopted by the Nazi regime in Germany to describe virtually all modern art.

Scale and proportion

Lightning on Mount Fuji by Katsushika Hokusai.  The actual Mount Fuji in the paiting is extremely large to scale.  The size in emphasized by the relatively small clouds that are surrounding the Mount Fuji. The extremely large crack in the right side of the Mount Fuji is also out of proportion.  It gives the sense that Mount Fuji is cracked in half which is not the case.  It is the artist impression that the crack is much larger that what it is in reality.

Contrast

Big Fall, Black and White by Pat Steir.  I selected this image for the obvious.  The black background gives the presences of absences while the white is the perfect contrast to give the image life.  Due to void of the black the white water stands out even more since there are no primary colors in the image.  Even with the absence of color you ca still see the details in the water fall as a whole.  The drops of water on the perimeter add the the overall contrast against the black background.

Visual Movement

Darkytown Rebellion by Kara Walker.  I selected this image becasue the pictures flows in two distinct portions.  The first flow is the the people.  From right to left the people move or flow .  The second portion of the picture is the flow of colors on the right side.  They flow in a circular motion.  I was not able to really show the circular motion with the arrow since the only go in a straight line or diagonally.

Repetition

The Migration of Negro Panel no.41 by Jacob Lawrence.  I selected this image due to repeating sequence of the bricks.  The sequence is three large bricks then next row two large bricks which I have indicated with the arrows.  While the picture may seem monotonous at first the repetition of how the brick are sized have flow. The shape of each brick may not be the same but you can definitely see there is a pattern forming by the sequence of the bricks.

Emphasis

Heliogabal by Anselm Kiefer.  This images has multiple focal points.  The bright intensity of the sun against the bottom not intense color really draws your eye directly to the sun.  The secondary focal point is the orange cloud above the sun.  I selected this image as secondary since the dark cloud separates it from the actual sun so the contrast in color divides it from the primary point of the sun. The final focal point would the word that is incorporated into the paiting.  While the color is taken from the cloud and sun since it a word is draws your attention.  I even had my 10 year old pick out the three focal points to have a different perspective.

Assymmetrical

Fifth Avenue by Childe Hassam.  I chose this paiting because your line of vision is not focused on the forefront the picture.  The center axis is not focused on the from middle of the picture but to the right.  The large buildings on the right draw and command your attention.  With the left side showing a building to also but not as large as the right.  The image is balance by the bottom portion of painting where not detailed the images balance both top and bottom.

Op Art

Blaze by Bridget Riley.  This image is true Op Art or optical art.  The way the angles go in a circular motion and draw the viewers attention to the blank center.  By looking at the image you almost have a dizzying effect due to the "motion".  Also there seems to be tint of yellow or it could be just my eyes playing tricks on me.  The image is reminiscent of old cracker jack toys where you would manipulate the the little piece of cardboard to make them image move.  This image almost has a 3D effect since the perception of angles give it depth and pop.

Texture

Enter by Robert Ryman.  This painting was painted on oil and neutral ground on archival board.  The painting measures Height 10.2 in.; Width 10.2 in. / Height 26 cm.; Width 26 cm.  I selected this image due to white brush strokes.  The painting gives the look of texture by the way the brush strokes are not neat and even.  The painting may have an actual texture feeling to the touch also.  Mr Ryman is famous for his use of white paintings to show texture.  The medium he uses combined with his intentional brush strokes create a textured image. The image almost looks as though a white substance were glued to the canvas.

Secondary Color Scheme

Ledger book drawing by Howling Wolf.   I selected this piece of work due to its main use of secondary colors.  The color orange dominates the drawing. On the color wheel orange is combination of red and yellow.  Except for black and blue there are no other primary colors used in the drawing.  The drawing looks as if if were created by crayon which does a wider variety of colors to choose from other than the basic primary, secondary and intermediate colors.  The piece is very complex in the details.  The use of orange grabbed my focus not only on the tapestry but also the much larger than life horse.

Intermediate Color Scheme

Blood Red Mirror by Gerhard Richter.  While the actual title of the painting give you the impression that the image is a primary color red in fact it is not.  The "red" is actually an intermediate color.  My first impression was that it was a secondary color but the image is darker than red, and violet.  I would place this color as a #3 between red and violet but not actually red-violet. It is very simplistic in form and shows the basics of intermediate color scheme since this color could not be achieved unless there were other colors added.  I would also say that there was tinting added to give the color a deeper, darker shade of red.

Light as the artist medium

Monument by Dan Flavin. Mr Flavin was the first artist to use fluorescent fixtures and tubes.  This creation above is a great example of his use of fluorescent tubes since the entire monument is made entirely of tubes.  While the creation does not manipulate the actual light to create a different perception it does glow and give the creation life.  By placing the fluorescent tube side by side and increasing the size with each tube and continuing the same trend on the other side is where you can see that it is a monument.  This placement of the tubes defines the creation.

Hatching

The Visitor by Mary Cassatt.  This drawing is a clear example of hatching.  I enlarged the image to show the clear lines that assist in giving the drawing volume.  The lines on the left wall give the image volume.  The closer the lines on the woman's clothing the more shadows are created thus giving the image depth and adds volume to the person. The upper right side of the woman's dress is not as dark which gives the impression of shadowing.

foreshortening

Prohibition's End or the Death of Dutch Schultz by Robert Morris.  While we did not study this artist in our text book I was struck with replication of Andrea Mantegna The Dead Christ.  The image is almost identical except for for the hair length and more sunken facial feature.  The stigmata on the feet are also missing.  Other than those three slight difference the concept is of "man" is the same.  While the leg are shortened it still creates a more realistic version.  The overall concept is not to make the lower extremities look cartoonish.  The dimensions of the feet give the viewer a realistic point of view.

Postive negative

Double Dominos by Donald Sultan. I chose this piece of artwork due to the contrast of space. The ground is considered the negative shape while the figure that commands our attentions is consider the positive shape. Each domino can viewed differently.  The first domino the black dots are the positive space with the white background is the negative shape. The opposite applies for the other domino.

Contour Line

Self After Rembrandt #2 by Pat Steir.  A couture line is the perceived line that marks the border of an object in space.  Pat Steir uses the lines to create a three dimensional figure of a persons face with their mouth open.  The image comes to life with the detail of the nose, mouth, and eyes.  It also has an eerie quality of someone how is there but not fully see them self. The drawing use of contour lines to show the face and facial structure.
I had to come back to this drawing because it is haunting.  The contours of the face really draw your attention to the almost completion of it.  The title alone of Self draws my curiosity in the artist perception of them-self.

Expressive Line

Street in Saintes-Marie...by Vincent van Gogh. An expressive line is a line that seems to spring directly from the artist's emotions or feelings.  I selected this entry from Vincent van Gogh due to the expressive lines in not only in the flowers but also the rooftops of the house.  The expressive lines of the flower help show that each flower is different.  The lines of the rooftop bring texture to the picture.

Implied line

Man Crossing a Square on.. by Alberto Giacometti. A implied line is a line created by movement or direction.  I chose this sculpture because of the direction the man is facing.  The positioning of the feet and legs gives the sculpture movement even though it is standing still.  The feet draw the eyes to give the impression that the man may just start walking.  With the right foot lifted

Outline

Abstract Cock by Henri Gaudier-Brzeska.  An Outline is the line which marks the outer limits of an object or figure; the exterior line or edge; contour..  This image is very flat and two dimensional.   I consider Abstract Cock an outline because it lacks details in the image.  Also very basic in form and structure.

Iconoclasts

Madonna of the Church by Jan van Eyck.  This image of the virgin Mary holding the Christ child would have been offensive during the era it was painted.  Based on the information in the text back in 1955 religious images should not be made.  This painting was made 1424-1429.  According to Wikipedia: Van Eyck pays close attention to the light falling through the windows, which bathes the Virgin and takes on a symbolic quality. Then light both alludes to Mary's virginal purity and represents God's presence and hand in the pictorial space. Also note is the artist impression of the shape of the virgin Mary.  The S-shaped and feminine look that the artist gives to Mary would be controversial.

Icon

Marilyn Monroe by Andy Warhol.  Marilyn's image is truly iconic.  For those who do not know her work such as myself I am familiar with her image.  Growing up seeing Madonna try to replicate Marilyn's image has made Marilyn even more Iconic if possible.  Imitation is the form a flattery and solidifies your standing as a Icon.  Aside from the her possible affair with the president and numerous movie roles, Marilyn is largely known for her "performance" of Happy birthday. This performance has even been copied for comic effect on Two and Half Men.  So many decades later she is still relevant.

Non-representational

My Baby by Beatriz Milhazes. This painting is completely non-representational.  The numerous circles almost look like work of Yayoi Kusama.  The circles closely resemble the dots collection.  The title is deceiving since there is no baby in the painting.  The colors are visually appealing and draw your attention to the spiraling circles to the end result which looks like a piece of fruit.  Since the painting is not traditional or true to title this was why I chose this painting as non-representational.

Abstraction

High Summer by Wolf Kahn. According to Wikipedia: Wolf Kahn works in oils and pastels. His works usually covers the subject of landscapes and his own personal vision of nature. His convergence of light and color has been described as combining pictorial landscapes and painterly abstraction.  The painting High Summer closely resembles the true image but the details or lack of detail make the painting an abstraction of the true image.

Representational

Yosemite Valley by Albert Bierstadt. This painting is representational of the Yosemite Valley..  The painting so real that the term photorealistic applies. Bierstadt joined several journeys of the Westward Expansion.  The lighting in the painting is consider romantic and behind the cloud it almost glows which is considered to be luminism. The canvas is large compared to others artists painting.  Bierstadt would not always stay true to the colors of nature and would in turn paint how he would see the colors.  In the painting you can see that greenness of the grass with no dry areas.

Form -vs- Content

Black Circle by Kazimir Malevich. The form of Black Circle is oil on 105.5 x 105.5 cm canvas.  This painting was done after the Black Square and the Black Cross to complete the Black series.  The content of the work as described by the artist is "new icons , holy images for the new aesthetics of abstract art."  He wanted to show a break from the traditional form of art by using geometrical objects on a white background. This broke from the iconographic reference.   For Malevich, Suprematism was concerned purely with feeling, and not logical understanding.ArtStory.Org

Universal truths. (4)

More Than Five Stars by Elif Uras 2003.  More Than Five Stars gives a viewpoint of leading up.  The bright colors make the painting inviting and warm.  The multiple layer of each room show show a different depth perception concept. With each floor the scenery changes allowing the viewer to determine if a spiritual level is reached considering the  higher the level the more bright and clear the images on the the top floor are.  The multicolored floors are reminiscent of the Catholic Churches stained glass windows minus the religious images which give the painting the religious aspect.

Beauty is in the eye of beholder.

Madonna Jaguar collage on wood was created in 1998 by Larry Qualls.  This collage has a unique quality in it presentation.  The name Madonna is normally viewed as religious. While I see a person in the collage others may not.  The feature are not well defined but depending on the view you may see certain images.  The collage has a certain texture and beauty to it.  While there is a lack of color the curved lines give the image a soft feel which does contrast with the deep, dark colors used.  There is also a sadness in the image with the way the persons mouth is portrayed.

Elavating to a whole nother level. (3)

Container City  by Nicholas Lacey and partners in 2002.  This building located in London, England so a more useful look at space.  Not only is this art form visually appealing due to the use of color but also functional. The colors compliment each other and stand out in the bland setting showing this architectural wonder..  The numerous floors and odd length of the floor design maximize square footage.  Each section of the building has it own patio for everyone to view form a different perspective of the surrounding city.  The larger third floor of structure also serves a as parking/ drive thru area.

Madonna-her visual "record" (2)

True Blue the poster to promote Madonna's third album in 1986 also became the cover of the album.  This image captures a time in early pop culture when fans of pop music were waiting to see what new image the "material girl" came out with.  Madonna was known to reinvent her image with each new album since her debut of self titled Madonna.  This poster is significant by showing a more refined look and the singers comparison to Marilyn Monroe.  This new image also started its very own fashion trend.  With platinum blonde hair, dark eyebrows and lite makeup, Madonna showed that less is more

A new view of water. (1)

Seascape by Mike and Doug Stam (Stam Twins) This photo was exhibited in the Stux gallery in Spring 1988.  The ripples in the waves give the two dimensional photo a three dimensional quality.  The lighting chosen show s different view of the normal blue inviting waves by appearing as black against white drops shows texture. The color of black normally shows a void of color but by contrasting the deep dark waves against texture.  The lines in the photo give each section its own perspective and view which in turn give life to the photo as a whole.

Kitsch

Made of handmade pottery, Joseph Enterprises has created the ultimate Kitsch! SpongeBob sitting with grass growing from is head is a classic.  This Chia SpongeBob represents the good humor and funny nature of this iconic character.  With his wide smile you can not help but smile of even laugh a little.  The makers captured every detail to bring a cartoon character to "life".  This is a creation that is not only pleasing to the eye but also brings us life in the the form of a plant.
